Patients Can Expect Shortened Wait Times as The Health Information is Restored

The MoPH (Ministry of Public Health) has announced that it will restore the HIS (Health Information System). The restoration of the system will help to reduce the numerous inequalities in the quality of health service between the coastal and the hinterland regions. This is an updated information system that was initially developed to protect the rights of patients. It will also be used to maintain data security as well as provide confidentiality.

After the system has been fully implemented, patients can expect a dramatic reduction in wait times for doctor appointments and other types of medical services. The system will also help to improve and promote health literacy among residents. HIS Receives Unprecedented Support from the International and Local Communities

Outside of the healthcare system, the new health information system has already garnered support from international agencies like the Center for Disease Control (CDC), based in the United States, and the I PAHO/WHO. The local community has also given its support to the new medical data system. The Ministry of Public Health is working in conjunction with UG (University of Guyana), GTI (Government Technical Institute) and e-Government. The primary stakeholders, along with the NIS (National Insurance Scheme), are all institutions that are considered to be essential to maintaining and sustaining this national e-health data system. All of these institutions have stated that they are firmly standing behind this initiative by the Ministry of Public Health. The two schools, the University of Guyana and the Government Technical Institute, will work to integrate a health informatics curriculum to help prepare graduates to enter the pool of other skilled personnel that the Ministry of Public Health can consider to maintain the system. Waiting Times Slashed

Doctors have also stated that the 21st-century information technology strategy will reduce the long waiting times that patients have had to endure for decades at public health clinics and other facilities. Once the system is fully implemented, providers will actually be able to spend more time with their patients, providing the care that had been lacking due in the past due to such long wait times. This will change patients' perception of their doctors. They will view their health providers as active members of their healthcare team. The partnership between providers and patients will improve, and as a result, there will be better outcomes.

This initiative will also empower patients who will be able to take the information they have learned to influence other members of their families. These family members will be interested in learning how to better care for themselves and will be motivated to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Many in the health care system believe that by the year 2020, all Guyanese residents will finally have the access to a high-quality level of care. The medical community plans to make sure every patient is cared for adequately.
