Public Advisory on Guyanese Citizenship

The Constitution and Laws of Guyana provide for the acquisition of Guyanese citizenship by four means:
1. Birth
2. Descent
3. Naturalisation
4. Registration
A person is a Guyanese citizen if he/she is born in Guyana. Such person is eligible for a Republic of Guyana passport and all other privileges given to any Guyanese.
A person born outside of Guyana is eligible to be a citizen of Guyana at the date of his birth if at that date his father or his mother is a citizen of Guyana. Such person are not required to meet residency requirements; however the birth must be registered by the parents as an overseas birth registration upon which the parents can apply for a Republic of Guyana passport for the child.
A person is eligible to apply for Guyanese citizenship by naturalization and show that he is ordinarily resident in Guyana and has been so resident throughout the period of five years immediately preceding his application, that he is of good character and that he intends to reside in Guyana. On approval, the person will be granted a certificate of naturalization and will have to take the oath of allegiance to Guyana.
A person who marries a Guyanese citizen is also eligible to apply to be register as a Guyanese citizen having met all the legal requirements i.e. having legally entered the country and having been legally in Guyana. Unlike persons applying for naturalization who must fulfill a specific number of years of residency, there is no such requirement in this case.
Persons can also apply to be registered as Guyanese citizen of a Commonwealth country as stated in the constitution of Guyana or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland. The person must show that he has been ordinarily resident in Guyana or has been in the service, throughout the period of five years ending with the date of his application.
It should be noted that in the interests of national security or public policy, the Minister of Home Affairs may refuse to register or naturalise a person as a citizen of Guyana.
Guyana citizenship cannot be obtained by means other than those stated here.
As such, persons are urged to be wary of internet schemers or any other fraudulent person, who offer any other means of obtaining Guyanese citizenship and a Guyanese passport. It is advised that the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration Support Services Section, be contacted for assistance with respect to any inquiry on citizenship matters.

AVISO PARA EL PÚBLICO SOBRE LA NACINALIDAD GUYANESA
La Constitución y Leyes de Guyana proveen los cuatros siguiente medios para obtener la ciudadanía guyanesa:
1. Por nacimiento
2. Por descendencia
3. Por naturalización
4. Por registro
Se considera de nacionalidad guyanesa aquellas personas nacidas en Guyana. Dicha persona tiene derecho de obtener pasaporte de la República de Guyana, así como otros privilegios que goza cualquier guyanés.
Una persona nacida fuera de Guyana tendrá el derecho a la ciudadanía guyanesa al momento de su nacimiento si, para dicha fecha su padre o madre es ciudadano o ciudadana de Guyana. A tal efecto, no se requiere ser residente de Guyana para que dicha persona goce de la ciudadanía guyanesa; sin embargo, el nacimiento debe ser registrado por sus padres como nacimiento en el exterior en base a lo cual los padres pueden solicitar el pasaporte guyanés para el niño o niña.
Una persona tiene derecho a solicitar la nacionalidad guyanesa por medio de la naturalización y debemos comprobar que el y ella es residente corriente en Guyana y que lo ha sido durante los cinco años inmediatos anteriores a su solicitud, que sea una persona de buena conducta y que piensa residenciarse en Guyana. Al ser aprobada dicha solicitud, a la persona se le otorgada un certificado de naturalización y tendrá que tomar el juramentote lealtad a Guyana.
Una persona casada con un ciudadano o ciudadana de Guyana también tiene derecho a solicitar ser registrada como ciudadano o ciudadana de Guyana si ha cumplido con todo los requisitos legales, es decir, haber ingresado legalmente al país y estar legalmente en Guyana. A diferencia de aquellas personas que solicitan la nacionalidad guyanesa por medio de la naturalización que tienen que haber sido residente por un numero de año específicos, no hay que llenar tal requisito en estos caso.
Aquellas personas que son ciudadano o ciudadana del commonwealth también pueden solicitar ser registrada como ciudadanos o ciudadanas de Guyana, o si son ciudadanos o ciudadanas de la República de Irlanda. Dicha persona deben probar que han sido residente corriente en Guyana o que han estado de servicio del Gobierno de Guyana durante cinco años completos cumplido al momento de haber presentado su solicitud.
Es de advertirse que en resguardo de intereses de seguridad nacional o de política publica, el Ministerio del Interior puede negar a que una persona sea registrada o naturalizada como ciudadana o ciudadano de Guyana.
La ciudadanía guyanés no puede ser obtenida por otros medios distintos a los que se indica en este Aviso.
A tal efecto, se recomienda a todas las personas ser cautelosas y abstenerse de tratar con personas inescrupulosas y fraudulentas que ofrecen por Internet otros medios para obtención de la ciudadanía guyanesa y pasaporte guyanés. Se les recomienda comunicarse con el Ministry of Home Affairs, Support Servicies Section (Ministerio del Interior, Sección de Servicio de Apoyo) para cualquier asistencia requerida sobre asuntos relacionados con la nacionalidad guyanesa.
